Paraloid B- 72 Glue

Paraloid B-72 Glue
This glue is based upon Paraloid B-72 (identical to Acryloid B-72 but made in the UK) dissolved in acetone and packed into ¾ oz tubes. This adhesive was made at the request of the British Museum.
B1500-001¾ oz $13.90

HMG Adhesive

HMG adhesive
HMG glue is widely used in England and is a blend of Nitrocellulose with Plastizers and Adhesion Promoters. HMG Glue has excellent color retention and does not yellow too much with age. It also allows good maneuverability when assembling the parts. Useful on pottery, wood, balsa, metals, leather, paper and cloth, but not rubber.
B1501-034¾ oz $13.90

Aron Alpha

Aron Alpha
The first instant glue to bond wood, leather and almost anything else without the need to use "activators" and "fixing" chemicals. Aron Alpha offers two distinct advantages over ordinary cyanoacrylate glues. First it will directly bond porous materials and, second, its medium viscosity minimizes running so common with ordinary cyanoacrylate adhesives. Aron Alpha will bond any combination of hardwoods, softwoods, balsa wood, leather, plastics (except Teflon), all varieties of rubber, metals, ceramics and glass. Open time is 2 to 3 minutes and setting time varies from 1 to 60 seconds, with more porous materials requiring the longer setting times. Still a reversible adhesive, since the cured films are soluble in acetone or nitromethane.

Milliput

Milliput
Superfine Milliput is a 2 part epoxy in stick form. Simply knead together equal parts of each stick. At first it is soft and adhesive, but becomes rock hard in 2-3 hours. Once hard, Milliput can be cut, sawed, sanded, drilled and painted. Widely used for porcelain and marble repairs.

Hxtal NYL-1

The first epoxy adhesive made specifically for conservation uses, not borrowed from another field. Hxtal NYL-1 is of exceptionally light color and yellows the least upon weathering of any epoxy known. The primary use of Hxtal is glass and china mending, but many other uses for such a low colored epoxy resin have been found. For example, Hxtal makes an excellent coating resin and can be air brushed on quite nicely from aromatic or ketone solvents. Used in this manner, Hxtal is a superb china glaze. This low viscosity, hard, colorless, glass-like epoxy resin also adheres strongly to metals, wood, ivory and marble.

This exciting new epoxy cures in about 1 week at 75°F or in 2 days at 95%deg;F. Cure times can be cut sharply by preheating the mix to 100°F for 15 to 20 minutes before use, and for even faster cure, immediately after mixing raise the temperature to 140°F - 170°F for 1 to 2 minutes. After cooling, such preheated resin has a viscosity similar to the viscosity of the epoxies commonly sold in tubes, and the cure time is just a few minutes. The cure time can be shortened by heating the cemented object up to 140°F.

Hxtal is a two part epoxy resin system. The resin (Part A) and the hardener (Part B) are mixed 3:1 by weight. The unused mix can be kept for 4 to 5 days in the freezer. It is most important that the container be tightly closed. The cured resin does not embrittle with time and is very resistant to yellowing and surface degradation, even after prolonged exposure outdoors. Hxtal's initial yellowness index is 6 to 8 which is unchanged after 1600 hours of Weather-ometer exposure, rising slowly to 13 to 14 at 3,000 hours. The best competitive epoxy adhesive has an initial Yellowness of 9 which rises to over 40 after 800 hours in the Weatherometer. After 800 hours exposure, the coating began to erode away.

When colored with titania, the resin can be made to match the finest porcelain in color, translucency and surface appearance. With or without pigment, Hxtal NYL-1 can be used as a glaze that is highly resistant to water and most solvents. The cured resin can be removed from hard surfaces with Epoxy Resin Dissolver, but prolonged soaking may be required to soften joints.

Polyvinyl Alcohol Resins LMW

These are produced by hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. Often designated by PVOH, this type of resin demonstrates good stability to light and because water is the only practical solvent, the film is very resistant to petroleum solvents, oil and fats. PVOH films have quite good strength and flexibility; most will remain tack-free up to about 90% relative humidity. Grades of high acetate content dissolve readily in cold water, those with little or no residual acetate require some heating (85°-90°C). Weak solutions may support mold growth - a low concentration of chlorinated phenol has been recommended in technical literature as an appropriate additive to combat this problem. The pH range of a 4% solution is 6-8.

Polyvinyl Acetate Resins

Soluble in most organic solvents (acetone is quite commonly used), polyvinyl acetate resins will adhere to both porous and non-porous materials. Flexibility of the adhesive film makes it particularly suitable in the bonding of textiles, paper and leather and in coating applications. Odorless and water-white. Also, these resins heat seal readily. Offered in bead form, all grades are 100% polyvinyl acetate with an approximate specific gravity of 1.18. For maximum solubility of the PVA resin, 5 to 8% water should be present in either acetone or ethyl alcohol. A particularly good PVA solvent is 50/50 acetone/ethyl alcohol containing 6% water.
